Ghoncheh Ghavami is a 25 years old Iranian-British woman who was arrested in Iran for attempting to watch a volleyball game. Ghoncheh has been transferred to the notorious Gharchak prison in Varamin-Iran and has started a dry hunger strike. Ghoncheh’s arrest has attracted international attention toward the serious lack of women’s right and their prohibition from entering stadiums in Iran.

Following the international condemnation of Ghoncheh’s arrest and the exclusion of women from sports arenas by the Islamic regime in Iran, FIVB the International Federation of Volleyball, has announced that Iran is not eligible to host the international volleyball games. The FIVB's official has called for Ghoncheh's release. Many volleyball teams in Italy and other countries have voice their opposition to Ghoncheh’s arrest and demanded that she be released immediately. The Islamic regime, which initially convicted Ghoncheh to a one-year term in prison, under an international pressure, has now backed down and announced that the final verdict for Ghoncheh’s prison term is yet to be finalised.

Although an international condemnation of Ghoncheh’s imprisonment has been mounting, the UK government has yet to make an effective stance against imprisonment of one of its citizens and to demand her immediate release. Ghoncheh is the second British citizen in prison imprisoned by the Islamic regime. Roya Saberinejad has also been sentenced to 20 years in Shahre Ray notorious prison for siting anti-regime comments on her Facebook page.

The UK Foreign Office, in the face of these ruthless and unjust convictions passed by the Islamic regime, has only made few inadequate and minimal efforts, such as expressing concerns for their situation, without making any serious attempts to pressurise the Islamic regime for their release from prison.

We need to join forces and press the UK Foreign Office and David Cameron’s government to make effective, concerted and serious efforts to force the Islamic regime to free Roya Saberinejad and Ghoncheh Ghavami immediately and unconditionally.
